The Break-Thru Dance Company (BTDC) with Owner and Choreographer Taryn Makaab-Smit will be putting on a magnificent show at Sibaya Casino, iZulu Theatre in September. This shoot was done for the various posters and advertising in the run-up to the show.
So last night after 10pm I drove two hours with two other photographers, Kierran Allen and Sean Baker, from Durban to Nottingham Road to take photos of the Milky Way. The first place we stopped was just along a dirt section of the road very open to the gusty wind making the 2 Deg C temperature feel like something below freezing. After about an hour we moved on to another position which had more hills and a few trees and rocks which produced some stunning foreground interest in some of our shots. We were at least protected from the wind and it did not seem too bad!
The Milky Way with its several hundreds of billion stars is a truly amazing sight especially being out in the sticks with relatively little going on for miles, or so it seemed that way in the dark. We did hear some jackals nearby! I got into bed at 5am and was up again at 8am wide eyed and bushy tailed ready for my first meeting at 9am….yeah right, been like a zombie most of the day! Before I was asleep I was already thinking about the next all night vigil with the stars….thanks Kierran and Sean we will do it again soon.

Ballet is one the most beautiful artistic endeavours and requires so much physical skill and strength of character to achieve even modest recognition. I have been so fortunate to have seen numerous Joffrey Ballet performances in Chicago over a span of nine years when we lived there. I have also been privileged to see a performance of the Bolshoi Ballet Company at the famous Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow …..something I will never forget! Now as a photographer I have the opportunity to see ballet performed again….. through my lens. I am working with the Break-Thru Dance Company (Taryn Makaab Smit) and her amazing dancers and will be producing some stunning images in studio and in urban settings in something I have called Ballet Project Durban, a concept started many years ago in New York and has been done all around the world in many cities. Over the coming months I will be adding several images …..enjoy!
